GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 322220
Can't change font size for printing messages in evolution, and default size is too large
Last modified: 2014-05-01 19:51:54 UTC
This bug has been opened here: https://bugzilla.ubuntu.com/show_bug.cgi?id=19913 "I've changed my font size for messages to be fairly small, 8pt. However, when I print a message, the font size which is used is huge. I swear, it looks like it's 14 or 16pt. In any case, I can't seem to find any place in the preferences to change the printouts. This single item stops me from ever printing out a message. The font size is so large, that it arbitrarily wraps lines that weren't wrapped in the message yet still preserves the existing new lines resulting in text that looks like this: First line proceeds normally all the way to the edge, but is one word too long so it like this."
is this a dup of bug 320895?
Verified in SLP 10 evolution 2.5.2 font size can be changed and the default font size is not large. Did you check in Edit ->Preferences ->Mail Preferences.
Created attachment 55190 [details] screenshot of the issue That's the same text using the same font (monospace 12) printed from current evolution / gedit versions

I can confirm there is something odd happening in Evolution 2.8.1 under Ubuntu 6.10 when I change fonts using Edit -> Preferences -> Mail Preferences -> Message Fonts. Sometimes the font changes are visible immediately in the Message Preview pane; sometimes I have to close down Evolution and restart the application to make them effective. I've tried to work out a pattern to this, and I haven't been able to yet. If I compare prints made with Deja Vu Sans 8 pt and Deja Vu Sans 16 pt, the only difference in the printout is that the spacing between the lines is greater with 16pt - everything else is identical. Bizarre
I don't know if this helps, but running Evolution from the command line shows the following messages when printing: (evolution-2.8:23211): GnomePrint-WARNING **: Could not create filter from description 'frgba': filter 'frgba' is unknown GnomePrintCupsPlugin-Message: The ppd file for the CUPS printer Stylus-Photo-RX600 could not be loaded. (my printer is on a remote machine) John
Is this a dupe of bug 301586 ?
I assume this is not fixed yet because I am still seeing this in v2.8.3. I just wanted to clarify some of the odd behaviour with printer fonts in case this helps identify the bug. Like the reporter, I see a medium size font on the screen and a larger font when printed, approx. 60 chars per line. As suggested above I tried Edit->Preferences->Mail Preferences, and unticked 'Use the same fonts as other applications'. When the message uses a variable-width font, e.g. HTML format, the printing seems OK and the font size can be changed using the 'Standard Font' settings. When the message is plain text it is displayed in the 'Fixed width Font'. But here there is no clear relationship between the display and print font size. Standard Font: Sans 10 Fixed Font: Monospace 10 => Printed incorrectly as Monospace 14. Sometimes it is displayed incorrectly as this too. Standard Font: Sans 11 Fixed Font: Monospace 10 => Displayed and printed correctly as Monospace 10!! NB Changing the standard font should have had no effect on the fixed font!! Standard Font: Sans 10 Fixed Font: Monospace 9, 8 => Printed correctly as Monospace 9, 8. Now let's try a variable font for the fixed text: Standard Font: Sans 10 Fixed Font: Sans 10 => Displayed and printed incorrectly as Sans 12. Standard Font: Sans 12 Fixed Font: Sans 10 => Displayed and printed correctly as Sans 10!! NB Changing the standard font should have had no effect on the fixed font!! Standard Font: Sans 10 Fixed Font: Sans 11, 12 => Printed correctly as Sans 11, 12. I could go on trying combinations to work out the mysterious secrets, but hopefully I have shown that there are major bugs in the Mailer using the Standard Font size in the display and printing of the Fixed Font.
Bumping version to a stable release.
I think this bug should be closed since Evolution moved to gtk-print. I checked on Evolution 2.22.1 (Ubuntu Hardy) and if I change the font size used on Evolution, the print preview responds accordingly.
Resolving as OBSOLETE per comment #10.
