Description Dave Gilbert 2005-11-13 19:57:05 UTC
Please describe the problem:
If I unmount a flash device from the desktop the icon immediately disappears,
but it seems to be possible for the OS (Linux) to still be writing to the flash
device after the icon has gone (I guess just flushing out stuff it had buffered).

I believe that there needs to be feedback as to when it is safe to remove the
device; the icon disappearing is what you would expect that feedback to be.

I'm not sure how you do it however - personally I've been using iostat -x to
watch the device and wait for the writes to finish - but there has to be a
better way!

Steps to reproduce:
1. Write lots to flash disc - then quickly....
2. Right click icon and unmount - icon disappears
3. do an iostat -x and watch the writes still in progress!

Actual results:
You might get tempted to pull your flash disc out even though it hasn't finished
writing

Expected results:
I wouldn't expect the icon to disappear until the writes have finished - it
would have to show some indication it was waiting for the writes

Does this happen every time?
If you get the buffers in the write mood.

Other information:
Ubuntu Breezy Badger, Linux 2.6.12-9 - USB Flash device.
