thanks for your bug. nautilus is not responsive for the font rendering. I'm not
sure that's a GNOME bug, reassigning to pango, they will probably know if it
should be closed as NOTGNOME.

I can't really tell from the screenshot whether that's hinted or not.
Can you attach a screenshot of the same font in the same text elsewhere?

Does it matter if you change the setting on the fly or if it is set
on login?

If it's just on the fly, the explanation is problem that Nautilus has
overridden the style for the status bar in a bad way (gtk_widget_set_style)
and that blocks the way that GTK+ tells widgets to redraw on
antialiasing settings.
Comment 4 Evert Verhellen 2005-11-15 21:31:16 UTC
The statusbar text in screenshot #1 is without hinting. I always log in with
hinting set to "None". My application font is set to "Bitstream Vera Sans" at
size 9.

Changing the hinting settings on-the-fly in the Font Rendering Details dialog
will show the underscore character correctly for "Slight", "Medium" and "Full",
but not for "None".

This is already fixed in 1.10.0 I believe, but only for Xft backend (which is
the case on FC4). So you should get it fixed when installing Pango 1.10.0. The
Pango backend is filed as another bug. Dupping.
