Version details: using poppler 0.4.2
Distribution/Version: Ubuntu/Breezy

Step to reproduce:
1. Open pdf file in evince
2. highlight some text
3. click outside of evince (eg. gnome system menu)
OR 4. without unhighlighting that text, highlight another block of text

Effects:
if #3: everything except highlighting text disappears
if #4: previously selected text disappears

This has been hit by some gentoo people, too, and I can reproduce it locally. 
Evince 0.4.0 and poppler 0.4.2

Thanks for reporting this, we should definitely fix that problem. The previous
bug has link on poppler issue.
