GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 318219
beagle shouldn't display search results in other languages (by default)
Last modified: 2011-02-02 11:04:17 UTC
Distribution/Version: SUSE 10.0 If I search for "dan", I get a zillion mis-hits, because beagle thinks that the french word "dans" is the plural form of my name. Fixing bug 143708 would solve that particular problem, but there would still be other cases where a search string was a valid word in two different languages and so searching for it would give hits the user doesn't want. For mostly-monolingual users, this is really only a problem with translations of system-wide files like .desktop files and documentation. For docs, it should be easy to grab the "lang" attribute from the top level and tag the file with that, and the search UI could use that property to decide whether or not to display the result. For .desktop files it's harder because all of the languages are mixed into a single file. Maybe the indexer could just index the file multiple times, once for each language? So then if I search for "suite", I'd get one hit for the /opt/gnome/share/applications/evolution-2.4.desktop with "beagle:Lang" = "en" and the snippet "Comment=The Evolution Groupware Suite" and another with "beagle:Lang" = "fr" and the snippet "Comment[fr]=La suite de travail collaboratif Evolution". (But I don't know the details of how the indexer works, and maybe this is impossible.)
This bug was reported against a version which is not supported any more. Developers are no longer working on this version so there will not be any bug fixes for it. Can you please check again if the issue you reported here still happens in a recent version of GNOME and update this report by adding a comment and adjusting the 'Version' field? Again thank you for reporting this and sorry that it could not be fixed for the version you originally used here. Without feedback this report will be closed as INCOMPLETE after 6 weeks.
I have no idea if this problem exists in current beagle, and don't have beagle installed, and don't care to install it to test it. But it's trivial to test if you do have beagle installed.
