GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 317787
window list width and sorting are not HIG-compliant
Last modified: 2005-12-30 10:55:08 UTC
The current window list does not conform to the GNOME Human Interface Guidelinese. It groups windows when there's plenty of space left, compresses names in a way they are not readable anymore (instead of grouping in some cases), etc. Whatsmore, in "do not group windows" mode, if you close one window... then all the others shrink! (not sure if it happens every time, haven't taken enough time to test everything). As an user, you expect the window list buttons to stay where they are when there is no grouping. But it shrinks! It seems totally out of control (visually), and makes some people really confused. Here is a .mov video (1.7mB) to illustrate the problem. Feel free to archive it and redistribute it as this server might sometimes be unavailable. http://jeff.nanokron.info/bug-gnome_panel_window_list-shrink.mov Other information:
Oh, another related behavior I want to add: if you have multiple windows, with long names (just use openoffice and it will be long enough), if you minimize and unminimize the longname window, the position of the widgets in the window list will change slightly. That is also very strange visually. I guess that's due to the fact that [ and ] are added around the window title.
I also have this problem. With plenty of space left to display it unnecessarily cuts off the title.
This is a problem for me too.
I just put another video, I've seen this bug on every GNOME desktop I have seen so far, could someone confirm? It would be really nice to have that investigated for GNOME 2.14 http://jeff.nanokron.info/bug-gnome_panel_window_list-shrink2.mov
