GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 316277
Path bar buttons have drop down list with sub-directories
Last modified: 2012-08-30 01:17:02 UTC
I saw this feature in Windows Vista, and think that it is really useful. Each button in the path bar has a drop down menu which displays the sub-directories of that directory. So not only can one navagiate quickly to any parent directory, but also to any sub-directory of any parent. For an example image, look at http://www.winsupersite.com/images/reviews/winvista_b1_28.jpg.
Using less vertical space for the buttons would also be very useful.

Yes, I've seen this feature. I'm not entirely convinced that it's a good idea. Though it will making browsing faster for some 'power users' it will also complicate the interface. I'm not sure whether the gain is worth the pain. I'll set the status to new for now. We'll be reviewing the design of the path bar soon so there should be an answer then.

From 619490: 'My suggestion is to use Google Chrome web browser approach: they don't have any dropdown history sign, but user can list its history by holding left mouse button over the "back" or "forward" buttons. I think this idea can be used to list these folders without using these ugly signs to repeat the similar functionality.'
We don't even have a proper breadcrumb widget yet...
Changing component as part of ongoing bug reorganisation work.
Agree with Allan that this probably isn't something we want.
