GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 315859
Make audible system bell play a sound (instead of using the X server bell)
Last modified: 2008-12-23 17:14:22 UTC
Using the X server bell for the system bell is just so... 1990s. On Linux/x86/Xorg the X server bell requires the pcspkr module to be compiled and loaded, and requires a PC speaker to exist and be wired up, which isn't the case with plenty of hardware. Also, where the PC speaker is working it is disconcerting to hear a (rather ugly) beep from the beige box rather than the sound card speakers. It would make sense for metacity to disable the X server bell and play a sound alongside flashing the titlebar/screen.
This looks like a unique feature request. Marking as NEW.
Makes sense, I guess metacity owns the bell-playing function and already converts it to a visual bell in some cases. So it would be simple enough to always tell Xkb to disable the bell, and play a sound ourselves instead. If someone cooks up a patch it makes sense to me.

Comment on attachment 55440 [details] [review] my proposal Should do this instead with just gstreamer or whatever directly, since libgnome is deprecated and drags in a lot of pesky cruft.

Given the needs-work status that this bug has been in for years, and that there's a separate bug with a patch implementing this feature using libcanberra, I'm going to mark this as a duplicate of the other bug. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 557921 ***
