This is actually a bug in GTK, which has been fixed in cvs - see bug 314452. GTK
2.8.3 (when it arrives) should fix the problem.

Thank you, James, for the quick reponse.  I patched gtk+-2.8.2 per bug #314452
and can confirm that the rhythmbox no longer crashes.
