Liferea has a single icon it uses for this - a colored version when there's
unread items, and a grayed-out version when there aren't.

Not sure whether Rhythmbox should use the same motif, but it's one idea.

The latest patch on bug 380896 implements this using rhythmbox and rhythmbox-notplaying icons.
