GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 314027
Proposal to add a simplified UI layout: single window + tabs
Last modified: 2008-01-15 12:58:55 UTC
Distribution/Version: Suse 9.3 Hello, I propose to provide an additional, simplified user interface layout, where GIMP: 1. uses only one window; 2. uses tabs to switch among open files. (see red rectangle in screenshot) 3. uses tabs to switch among tools (e.g. channels, paths, tool options, etc). (See green rectangle in screenshot). Screenshots: http://tinyurl.com/8ogxq http://tinyurl.com/agrps Some of the advantages this would bring: * you would no more be required to click twice in the taskbar to edit a picture---once to activate the picture and once to activate the tool window. (Note: I know the options "hints for the toolbox" but it is ignored by most window managers, most notably kwin); * you would no more be required to move and resize each new window by hand. Each time I open a new file, I have to drag the window top-left and then enlarge it. (Maximizing does not work because the toolbox window would be covered as well.) This tends to be frustrating, without providing any advantage for non-power users, who only need to see one picture at a time. Comments would be appreciated. Cheers!

As you can probably tell by looking at the referenced bug reports, if you are proposing to yourself do the coding to add this extra interface, you would be providing something that has long been wanted and would be highly valued, so by all means go ahead and give it a try.
