Description Alexander Shopov 2005-08-16 19:18:21 UTC
The Bulgarian location marked "Gorna" in po-locations should be spelled "Gorna
Orjahovitza".
There is no location besides a very tiny village with no airport to be called
Gorna in Bulgaria. The airport is in "Gorna Orjahovitza".

Alexander Shopov
Leader of the Bulgarian Gnome translation team.

Due to string freeze, it may be difficult to change before 2.12.
In the meanwhile, you can translate in Bulgarian in the proper way, so that in
the end, Bulgarian users will see the correct name.

If you wish to try to get this pass now (so it appears in 2.12), you may ask at
gnome-i18n for a change to be made.

go-go-gorna

Google shows 14000 hits for "Gorna Oriahovitsa" vs 200 for "Gorna
Orjahovitza".

Please note that Google is not an official source of information and nobody
cannot rely on it in such cases -- in your search it only shows that the
majority of the people lack proper education.

The spelling you (Ryan Lortie) propose is according to the old-style standard,
it changed several years ago. Given the fact that the names of all vessels of
the state fleet changed due to this (e.g. "Tcherni Vrah" > "Tcherny Vrakh")
which wasn't cheap at all, I think it is much better to change this particular
string as our fearless leader (Alexander Shopov) suggests.

My name was once "Iavor", I changed my passports/etc to "Yavor" because of this
new transliteration standard. My brother was "Kaloian" and signed a special
declaration to remain "Kaloian", we don't want such exceptions for the locations.
Comment 4 Yavor Doganov 2005-08-26 21:59:10 UTC
I forgot to add: as Simos pointed, it makes no sense to change this now, at this
stage of the string freeze. It is pointless to cause trouble to so many teams,
IMO we can live with that a few months more.

Ah, and it was "Cherni Vrah", became "Tcherny Vrakh".

Out of interest, where is Gorna Orjahovitza in relation to Gorna? (I'm just checking that Orjahovitza does not mean airport).

I assume this new transliteration standard means that the official American spelling has changed.

HEAD is not frozen at the moment, please feel free to change this string as appropriate.
Comment 6 Alexander Shopov 2006-01-03 12:48:39 UTC
The proper name is **Gorna Oryahovitza**.
In Bulgaria there are many places - villages and small cities that consist of 2 or more words and one of them is "Gorna" (the word means "upper").
The biggest one and that has an airport and is situated at the coordinates given in Locations.xml.in is Gorna Oryahovitza.
The official site of the municipality is: http://www.g-oryahovica.org/

I have fixed the problem here: http://mail.gnome.org/archives/cvs-commits-list/2006-January/msg00492.html
