Description Benoît Dejean 2005-08-06 17:29:48 UTC
Hi, i'm using simple-click and it's very hard to select a file in nautilus (or
other apps like file-roller (where it's nearly impossible)). I know about
ctrl-click and shift-click, but it's a bit heavy to select a single file.
Right-click which pops-up the menu also select the file. This is not intuitive.
I currently have to draw many selection areas so select all the file i want (i
even do a selection area for a single file).

I'd like to have simpler way to select a single file or many files. I'd like to
be able to select a file just by moving the cursor over it, then the file would
get selected after a few ms (say 500ms). Some file-manager work like this (MS
Windows explorer iirc).

Thanks.

hum, it's not a duplicate of #164632 (which is a duplicate of #138931). It is
actually hard to select files in list view with single-click, but i am talking
about icon view (My comment about file-roller was misleading and is #164632).
Comment 3 Sebastien Bacher 2005-08-07 16:00:15 UTC
Changing the selection on mouse-over seems to be a bad idea to me. Moving the
cursor on an object without wanting to select it is frequent. Any maintainer
with an option on that?
Comment 4 Benoît Dejean 2005-08-07 16:15:38 UTC
Maybe it's bad, but then how can i easily select files (one or many) ?
Comment 5 Sebastien Bacher 2005-08-07 17:07:50 UTC
click on an empty space and drag and drop to do a selection with the icon you want?
Comment 6 Sebastien Bacher 2005-08-07 17:08:18 UTC
that's not a dnd, just do a selection ...
Comment 7 Benoît Dejean 2005-08-07 17:15:16 UTC
doing a selection for a single file is heavy and not intuitive.
Comment 8 Sebastien Bacher 2005-08-07 17:53:41 UTC
so use shift or control while clicking?
Comment 9 Benoît Dejean 2005-08-07 18:18:50 UTC
i know, but it's painful to have to use control to select a single file.
Comment 10 Sebastien Bacher 2005-08-07 19:02:28 UTC
do you have any other option working fine?
Comment 11 Erika Ahlswede 2005-08-10 14:40:58 UTC
This is pretty much the reason why double-click exists and is the default. :)
Comment 12 Benoît Dejean 2005-08-10 14:51:59 UTC
I have to disagree. There are other file-managers that are fully functional and
work just fine with single-click (and even with a one-button mouse).
Comment 13 Christian Neumair 2005-08-21 16:13:45 UTC
Do you suggest that other previously selected files are unselected on hovering
if the hovered file is not part of the current selection?
Comment 14 Christian Neumair 2005-08-21 16:15:50 UTC
Note that we could also select it in addition to the current selection after a
short timeout (1 second) and make it exclusively selected after a longer timeout
(2 seconds).
Comment 15 Benoît Dejean 2005-08-22 10:26:12 UTC
sound great.
