Description Funda Wang 2005-07-29 15:11:01 UTC
In vertical panel, the order of the text in Chinese(maybe in Japanese) is wrong.
For example, "Applications" has been traslated as "ABCD", but the actural order
of text being displayed is "DCBA".

Anyway, thank you for not rotating the Chinese characters in vertical mode. The
standard rendering algorithm of Chinese characters vertically is, one by one
from top to bottom, but the characters does not rotate.
Comment 1 Funda Wang 2005-08-10 09:21:04 UTC
It goes the wrong way. Not only the bug have not been fixed, but also you've
roated the Chinese characters :(

Or, should I reassign this bug into pango?
Comment 2 Vincent Untz 2005-08-18 17:04:32 UTC
I think it's a pango bug. (else it's a gtk+ bug)
Comment 3 Behdad Esfahbod 2005-08-18 17:07:39 UTC
Pango currently does not support vertical text at all. But looks like a good
time to start supporting that. Please attach screenshots.
Comment 4 Behdad Esfahbod 2005-08-18 17:16:07 UTC
What's happening is that panel rotates the text clockwise/counterclockwise based
on which side of the screen the panel is, and the text rendering happens
rotated, which results in what you get right now.

What you want is an intelligent rotation that switches to top-to-bottom layout
for Chinese and other relevant scripts.

Owen, any thoughts?

Vertical writing is a "big feature" that would have to be implemented
to get the expected behavior for Chinese.
