1) Configure Nautilus to use single click behavior.
   Menu: Edit/Preferences, Behavior,  (x) Single click to activate items

2) Open gedit, then Open a file with the menu or toolbar.  Note that folders or
files selected in dialog have to be double clicked to be activated.
