Description suvi 2005-06-30 14:11:40 UTC
Please describe the problem:

I have a freshly new Fedora Core 4 with Gnome 2.10 installed.
Unfortunatly I am lacking a sound card.

When I start totem I get a popup

Totem couln't start up
"ALSA device "default" does not exists"

Steps to reproduce:
1. starting totem ends the app with a pop-up "ALSA device "default" does not exists"
2. starting totem with --disable-sound doesn't help at all (same popup)
3. --disable-crash-dialog doesn't hel either (same popup)

Actual results:
totem doens't run.

Expected results:
The app should either run directly without soundcard, or tell me how I can fix
the problem.

Does this happen every time?
yes

Other information:
why is does --disable-sound not working?
Comment 1 Bastien Nocera 2005-06-30 14:28:28 UTC
--disable-sound isn't a proper option, afaict.
Change the sound device in the "Multimedia Systems Selector" in the preferences
menu.
Comment 2 suvi 2005-06-30 14:40:33 UTC
I have change the sound output setting to "ARTSD". This is the only pipe, which
is working without popup error.

Unfortunatly totem is now starting and ending immidiatly. Actually the same then
before, but without the popup.

Is there something like /dev/null for sound, that I could use instead of a
soundcard?
Comment 3 suvi 2005-06-30 14:41:01 UTC
BTW: I have version 1.0.4
Comment 4 Michaël Arnauts 2005-06-30 15:11:29 UTC
AFAIK, if you set the Default sink in "Multimedia Systems Selector" to silence,
it should work.
Comment 5 Ronald Bultje 2005-06-30 16:32:19 UTC
Set the output to 'Custom', and then add the string 'fakesink'. It'll act as a
/dev/null like you're asking for.

Thank you all, the workaround.
It's running!

I have added the workaround to 170719.
