GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 307528
Evolution Should have a System Tray Icon To Show Number Unread messages.
Last modified: 2013-09-10 14:04:09 UTC
Distribution: Novell Linux Desktop 9 (i586) Package: Evolution Severity: enhancement Version: GNOME2.6. unspecified Gnome-Distributor: Novell, Inc. Synopsis: Evolution Should have a System Tray Icon To Show Number Unread messages. Bugzilla-Product: Evolution Bugzilla-Component: Mailer Bugzilla-Version: unspecified Description: Please describe your feature request: There are a number of Linux products, KDE based and Gnome, that provide the system tray with an icon. Products like GAIM and KMail for instance. Having this allows a person to 'close' the application and have it exist only in the system tray (i.e. it is not minimized with an icon on the workspace). KMail, goes one step further and provides the system area icon overlayed with an numeric counter of the number of unopened messages I have in my account. It does not restrict itself to just the mailbox folder, but all folders that are monitored by the email client. If Evolution was to support this, there should be questions similar to GAIM preferences. For example, allowing the user to configure 'close application' behavior. Should it close the application, or maintain a system tray icon. Notification of new messages should be augmented with ways to use the system tray icon to maybe 'blink', or some other icon animation. Finally, from the icon you should be able to get a context-menu to do some common tasks. For example, compose a new message, open the product, quit the application. ------- Bug moved to this database by unknown@bugzilla.gnome.org 2005-06-13 15:32 UTC -------
There is a bounty for new mail notification. Currently new mail is notified through dbus, although there isn't a default gnome applet listening to those events. You should take a look at the mail-notification-daemon: http://www.nongnu.org/mailnotify/ It works with evolution as well as several other methods. You might want to give it a try. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 127516 ***
