Description Jon Cooper 2005-06-07 12:37:42 UTC
Distribution/Version: Ubuntu Hoary

If you are using the file selector from gnome, which has started to be included
in a lot of newer apps (firefox and azureus), and you're choosing a save path,
it uses the current SELECTED directory. So if you want to save a file to home,
you can't click home, because that will save it in the first folder in your home
folder (since the first folder gets automatically selected). So, if you want to
save something in your home folder, you have to double click "filesystem" then
home, then highlight your login and click save. It's a pain!
Comment 1 Christian Kirbach 2005-06-07 15:09:13 UTC
So, what app are we talking about? The new file selector can be used in
different setups. They use it in different configurations.

I do not understand your point. If I double-click on "Home Folder" in the left
pane of the folder view and select "save" the data will be stored in /home/
nazgul , i.e. my home folder.
Comment 2 Jon Cooper 2005-06-07 15:34:29 UTC
Through experience, you have to select a folder (i.e. highlight it, not open
it) within the selector to extract into that folder. I guess its a mentality
thing - you have to highlight the folder to save into, rather than enter the
folder to where the file(s) is/are expected to be placed.

Lets take the example of File Roller. If I click "Extract", then double click
to open my "Downloads" folder within Home, then click Extract, the contents of
the archive are extracted to the first folder within "Downloads". This is due
to the file selector automatically highlighting the first folder in the
contents pane. If I were to only highlight my "Downloads" folder while viewing
my Home directory, then click Extract, the files would be extracted directly
into "Downloads".

Comment 3 Billy Biggs 2005-06-07 15:38:35 UTC
Note that the behaviour for this has been changing.

On my Debian unstable machine using GTK+ 2.6.4, if I double click on "Home" in
the bookmarks, the chooser opens that with the first item selected in the list.

On my RH FC3 machine using GTK+ 2.4.14, if I double click on "Home" in the
bookmarks, the chooser opens but does NOT select the first item in the list.

Comment 5 Christian Kirbach 2005-06-07 15:59:56 UTC
Jon: Ok i got the idea. I agree that no item should not be selected when
entering a folder.

Biily: 2.4.14 ?? the latest seems to be...

13 April 2005
Version 2.6.7 of GTK+ is now available.

Hmm this is gtk+ 2.6.4 on Ubuntu Hoary and the first item in the folder view is
*not* auto-selected.
Retitling.

Jon: strange you should observe the same behaviour...

Comment 6 Jon Cooper 2005-06-07 16:04:03 UTC
Wow you guys are fast ;)

I'll double check all behaviour when I get home tonight and put together a few
test cases to help reproducing the behaviour.

I've also noted this thread on the ubuntu support forums and invited comments.

I've just double checked my Hoary machine at home and the file selector behaves
this way in:
Comment 9 Jon Cooper 2005-06-07 21:02:32 UTC
Apologies for the previous comment.

I've just double checked my Hoary machine at home, using a create/open > save as
routine. The file selector behaves this way in:
  - File Roller
  - Gnome Bittorrent

But not in:
  - Firefox
  - Gedit
  - Evince
  - AbiWord

So it would appear the bug should be placed with those applications rather than GTK.

Jon, what is the exact version of gtk+ that you are using?
Comment 11 Federico Mena Quintero 2005-06-07 21:35:56 UTC
Actually, this is a duplicate. You need an updated gtk+.

The corresponding Ubuntu bug is https://bugzilla.ubuntu.com/show_bug.cgi?id=6615
