Description Conor O'Neill 2005-06-07 00:21:30 UTC
Distribution/Version: Ubuntu Hoary

Detail:
1) open up a nautilus window in spatial mode
2) Select Edit->Backgrounds and Emblems
3) Select "colors"
4) Drag a colour over to the window that was opened in 1) to change the
background colour
5) Open up a sub-folder of the window opened in 1)

Result:
Colour of the sub-folder's window is not the same as that of the parent window.
 It is the default colour.

Expected:
Colour of the sub-folder's window is the same as the parent folder's window. In
effect, the background colour change operation should be recursive, or there
should be the option to apply a colour change recursively just as there is an
option to apply a colour change universally or to a single window.

Rationale:
Coloured backgrounds are more than just a pretty toy. With Gnome VFS maturing
to the point where I use it quite a bit, I'm constantly using nautilus to manage
files through ssh on the servers at my school. I also run a server at home, and
I use nautilus quite a bit to manage files on that. To differentiate between
windows representing my local machine and windows representing servers, I use
different colours. Unfortunately, the backgrounds of sub-folders of coloured
server folders default to the local colour. This leaves me with two options:
spend a VERY long time changing the background colours of all the sub-folders on
the server (manual recurse...no fun), or have everything one colour: the local
colour.

Just another comment, this bug was not filed because I like pretty colours (and
I do). This bug was filed immediately after I mistakenly deleted a finished
copy of a project from my school's servers, instead of deleting my local cached
copy. I confused the two because the folder windows both used the same icons
and both had the same (local) background colour. Luckily I didn't lose TOO much
work, but it could have been _very_ bad. Nautilus is a very handy tool for
managing remote filesystems...it should contain facilities to ostensibly notify
the user that they are working on a remote system, NOT their local one.
