Description Clytie Siddall 2005-05-21 13:34:43 UTC
1. Firstly, I would strongly suggest that Gnome packages, particularly those like Evolution who include
huge lists of locations, use the ISO-3166 package as a reference. They are kept up-to-date, and are
translated. This reduces the size of the file, the load on the translator, and avoids the difficulties of
keeping those lists up to date, and of the inevitable conflicts in information. Please contact the package
maintainer, Alastair McKinstry <mckinstry@debian.org>, for assistance with the implementation, and
for any further information.

setting target milestone, adding dependency - perhaps this should be reassigned,
don't know
Comment 2 André Klapper 2005-06-14 14:12:36 UTC
2,6,8 are still valid, i'm going to submit a patch for them.
3. one has been already fixed.
4. is a duplicate of bug 301460 and already fixed.
5. chen removed that string in cvs revision 1.21.
7. has been removed by not zed.
9. has been fixed.

Comment 8 André Klapper 2005-12-28 16:04:32 UTC
10,11,12,13,14,15,17: strings do not exist anymore.

16: only one Th which stands for Thursday. will provide translation comments.

18:
"Eolution VCard importer" does not exist anymore.
the next issues refer to gconf strings where explanation is the same as the summary, but with an additional dot.
still valid:
   #: ../ui/evolution-calendar.xml.h:8
   msgid "Delete this Occurrence"
   #: ../ui/evolution-calendar.xml.h:9
   msgid "Delete this occurrence"
also, both "Delete All Occurrences" and "Delete this occurrence" exist in
/ui/evolution-calendar.xml. generally, we should check/search for "occurr"!
"print summary" does not exist anymore.
Comment 9 André Klapper 2006-01-27 15:25:06 UTC
updating this:

6: fixed.
16: fixed, i have provided translator comments for the weekday abbreviations.

so i have still have to do:
2: still valid.
8: still valid.
18: hmm, ok. capitalization. have to take a look into the HIG about this: http://developer.gnome.org/projects/gup/hig/2.0/design-text-labels.html#layout-capitalization
Comment 10 André Klapper 2006-02-05 20:25:17 UTC
i fixed 2 and 8 in cvs.
so only 18 is still valid.

Comment 13 André Klapper 2006-02-13 17:18:33 UTC
i can neither find "authentication type" nor "print summary" in current evolution, so all string issues have been fixed.

first paragraph still remains - clytie, which files with locations do you refer to? evolution/calendar/zones.h ?
Comment 14 André Klapper 2006-02-13 17:34:59 UTC
okay, and addressbook/gui/contact-editor/e-contact-editor-address.c
Comment 15 André Klapper 2006-06-29 14:09:57 UTC
removing old target milestone.
Comment 16 Johnny Jacob 2007-08-23 16:44:13 UTC
Looks like the patch is already committed. The files have the proposed strings. So marking attachment 47757 [details] [review] as obsolete.
Comment 17 André Klapper 2007-09-12 04:21:56 UTC
regarding the ISO-CODES thingy:

other apps already use iso-codes, taking a look at the implementation can perhaps help a little bit (yes, i'm naive), e.g. http://svn.gnome.org/viewcvs/galeon?view=revision&revision=8573 , http://svn.gnome.org/viewcvs/totem?view=revision&revision=2159 .
Comment 18 André Klapper 2008-01-08 14:33:50 UTC
last comment refered to clytie's original comment:
"Firstly, I would strongly suggest that Gnome packages, particularly those
like Evolution who include huge lists of locations, use the ISO-3166 package as a reference. They are kept up-to-date, and are translated. This reduces the size of the file, the load on the translator, and avoids the difficulties of keeping those lists up to date, and of the inevitable conflicts in information."

iso-codes seems to be under LGPL.
The iso-codes maintainers can be contacted by <pkg-isocodes-devel@lists.alioth.debian.org>
Comment 19 André Klapper 2008-01-08 15:43:43 UTC
hmm,
iso_3166 lists country names,
iso_3166_2 seems to list subareas,
iso_15924 lists alphabets,
iso_4217 lists currencies,
iso_639 lists languages.

clytie, which list in evolution did you refer to?
i assume the stuff like
    #: ../calendar/zones.h:314
    msgid "Europe/Nicosia"
    msgstr "Europa/Nicosia"
, or something else?
any idea on how to gather the city names data? the only thing i have in mind is to share the translations with Locations.xml from gnome-applets/libgweather, but no idea how to code that...
Comment 20 André Klapper 2008-01-08 15:46:20 UTC
perhaps i should clarify my question in comment #19:
*where* from the iso-codes package should evolution use strings to substitute *which* strings in evolution?
Comment 21 Clytie Siddall 2008-01-09 13:41:40 UTC
I'm afraid I didn't go as far as recording each string from Evo, and matching it up with an iso-codes string.

I suggested using iso-codes, because I have noticed that quite a few programs list country names, or languages, or city names, sometimes profusely, and not only is that duplication of work for us, but these lists invariably include mistakes when compared with the standard information.

So I'm trying to encourage developers to use the iso-codes information as a library, a standard resource for this kind of information. Although the initial setup might be fiddly (I don't know), it is bound to save developers time, effort and mistakes once setup.

I'm sorry I can't do any of this for you, but I am no longer capable of coding.
Comment 22 André Klapper 2008-01-09 15:09:00 UTC
hi clytie, i didn't ask you for coding, just for a clarification which "huge list of locations" you refer to in evolution. :)

if you could name a program that gets city names from the iso-codes package, pleasr tell us, because i cannot find anything in iso-codes that lists *city names", but this would be required *if* i refer to the same list in evolution that you refered to.
Comment 23 Matthew Barnes 2008-01-20 03:19:48 UTC
I wrote an iso-codes parser for my composer branch. Enchant reports available dictionaries as a list of locale codes, I match the abbreviations against the human-readable language names parsed from iso-codes and use the results to generate the "Current Languages" menu in the composer.

If the reporter can point me to where else in Evolution/E-D-S iso-codes could be used -- even if it's just places in the UI or in the translations -- I can attempt to resolve the first point.
Comment 24 Clytie Siddall 2008-01-20 08:06:46 UTC
OK, in the current file (or at least, last time I updated it), we still have:

1. A long list of countries, starting with this string:

#: ../addressbook/gui/contact-editor/e-contact-editor-address.c:137
msgid "United States"
msgstr "Mỹ"

and ending with:

#: ../addressbook/gui/contact-editor/e-contact-editor-address.c:378
msgid "Zimbabwe"
msgstr "Dim-ba-bu-ê"

2. A list of language/script names starting with this string:

#: ../widgets/misc/e-charset-picker.c:65
msgid "Arabic"
msgstr "A Rập"

and ending with:

#: ../widgets/misc/e-charset-picker.c:75
msgid "Turkish"
msgstr "Thổ-nhĩ-kỳ"

For some reason, this string occurs a bit further down:

#: ../widgets/misc/e-charset-picker.c:106
msgid "Ukrainian"
msgstr "U-cợ-rainh"

Note A:
Iso-codes doesn't include timezones, yet. I have emailed them, asking if they plan to add timezones to their data.

Note B:
You could also save time and energy by calling the locale data (having an option "Date/time according to locale), because there are a _lot_ of strings about time/date format, ordinal dates, and day and month names. All these values are specified in the locale.

2. refers to charsets in #: ../e-util/e-charset.c which also has non-language items.
