Steps to reproduce:
1. Run GIMP
2. File->Open
3. Navigate to a certain directory (E:\) with type set to "All Files"
4. Move the scroller down until files near 'pagefile.sys' appear
5. Assert happens.

does not happen when type is set to JPEG

This has been reported many times already (including less than an hour ago). 
See comment #9 of bug #301139 for a workaround.
