Same thing here.  GIMP 2.2.6, Gentoo, AMD64.  Seems to happen only to files with
EXIF data.

Removing EXIF with jhead fixes the problem:

jhead -de file.jpeg

No, I don't think this is a duplicate, since this bug is a linux bug and totally unrelated to the GIMP 
installer on Windows.
Or am I just missing something here? Possible the cause is the same with libexif that needs to be fixed? 
Just wanted you to read this one more time to confirm that this is the same bug, cause it's not entirely 
obvious to me.
