Description Ronald Bultje 2005-04-25 08:16:15 UTC
The past few weeks, we've seen a lot of users come in and ask those two questions:

a] amarok claims that it cannot find a mp3 decoder
b] how do I playback musepack/mp4/...

I'd like a detailed explanation for popular distro's on how to solve this, both
where to get those packages for the distros that have them available (Ubuntu
world? FreshRPMs has faad) as well as the manual installing of dependencies and
compiling plugins (which would, for example, be required for musepack, since
there's RPMs for the lib but not for the plugin) without screwing up the rest of
the installation (basically ./configure && cd ext/musepack && make all install).

Any volunteers welcome.

Two parts really: 1) where to find the packages, 2) how to do it from source.
Just a bit of research. Marking gnome-love.

Do we still want this, since we have the codec install?

I don't think so, normal users will have their distribution to care for this kind of stuff and other's should be able to figure out themselves with the plugin documentation.
