GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 301656
ctrl-A (select all) doesn't do the obvious thing
Last modified: 2005-08-17 22:42:55 UTC
often people send text in emails that has to go into work reports or documents. the most natural behaviour is to get an email, go ctrl-A (normally means select all), then ctrl-V in the word processor. but ctrl-A in evo selects all the msg's in the list, rather than selecting all the text in the email. this is non obvious. Other information:
should become more clear by the 2.4 menu rewrite dobey is currently working on.
dobey: since you are currently working on this, assigning to you. in order to destroy the UI component (as discussed with jpr, dobey, and nags), changing component to mailer.
ctrl-A on a message list is doing the obviuos, select all the messages in the list. Use Ctrl-Alt-A to select contents of a message.
Case 1: I click on my message. (so focus is off the msg-list) I press ctrl-A. It doesn't select all on the body of the msg. Not obvious. Case 2: I have the msg open in a separate window - far away from the evo msg list. I press ctrl-A. Nothing happens. Not obvious. Case 3: I look in the "Edit" menu of my main evolution tree. I see no menu entry explaining ctrl-alt-a. Not obvious. Case 4: I have another separate msg window. I look in the Edit menu of that. I see no menu entry explaining ctrl-alt-a. Not obvious. Case 5: I go to "Help->Quick Reference" and see the "Ximian Evolution Quick Reference Card" with a whole bunch of key short cuts. I don't see any thing explaining ctrl-alt-a. Case 6: I submit a bug on bugzilla and learn it is not the standard ctrl-A but ctrl-alt-A. I press ctrl-alt-a on my msg window. No text is highlighted. Nothing happens.
