if i use evince to view a large pdf document it shows the first page of the pdf
almost instantly, but once it starts generating the thumbnails for each page it
is unresponsive, i can't advance pages it takes quite a long time. During this
process if I change to a diferent virtual desktop and then back to the one where
evince is, the evince window is grey and it takes several seconds until it
re-renders the current page.

I'm using evince on a P-III 733 MHz with 256 megs of RAM and poppler CVS with
the splash backend, the cairo backend is a lot slower.
