Description moseby 2005-02-24 17:41:51 UTC
Description of Problem:
When an Outlook user forwards a meeting invite the
"Normal" message display gives no indication of
the forwarder, just the originator. Usually the
only indication that I get that this came from
someone I care about ;), is some text buried in
the ics file.

The "full header" view shows a "Sender:" which
shows the desired forwarder information.

If an email has a "Sender:" header line, it should
show up in the "Normal" header display just like
"CC:" and the others.

Steps to reproduce the problem:
I have no access to outlook, but it happens every
time. Forwarding via Evolution changes the To:
field instead of adding a Sender:

Actual Results:
Calendar item appears to come from the wrong sender.

Expected Results:
The forwarded calendar item should have some
indication of who the forwarder was in the
"normal" message header display mode.

How often does this happen?
Every time.

Additional Information:

My system is Mandrake 10.0 with evol 1.4.6

I generally agree with this submitter's comments. I have witnessed
this issue with Outlook mail I have received. A few additional comments:

1. The intent of the "Sender" header is to show who sent a message on
behalf of who the message is "From". Outlook's implemention of "From"
here is arguably flawed. When an invitation is forwarded, it is being
extended by the sender. It should be "From" the sender, not who
originally sent the invitation to the sender.

2. A nice-to-have feature would be to show in the "From" heading at
the top of the message, something along the line of:

From: $SENDER_HEADER (on behalf of $FROM_HEADER)

I believe this would alleviate some of the confusion, without having
to have Evolution take-on an Outlook-style interpretation of the
Sender field.

3. Alternative to item 2 above would be to display the "Sender" header
field in the Normal View along with the "From" header field, so it's
somewhat obvious there is a difference.

you can add this to your default visible headers if you'd like, but
that's not a good default for us to provide.
Comment 3 moseby 2005-04-05 18:02:32 UTC
Sorry, but I must disagree.

I've searched the menus and RTFM and have discovered no method to
change the "normal" header display contents nor add the Sender: header
as a list column.

It seems perfectly reasonable to me to expect the Sender: header to be
presented either like the CC: field does or in a manner similar to
that described by p.bryan.

P.S. this is a retry at getting this comment subitted. Sry if it is a dup.
Comment 4 Paul Bryan 2005-04-05 19:57:35 UTC
I also tend to disagree with the proposed solution (not to mention
that there does not seem to be any facilities in the user inerface to
actually implement it).

I suggest a significant number of people use Evolution simply because
of its ability to integrate with Outlook. If Sender differs from From,
it stands to reason that displaying it as a standard header solves
this problem with the least impact on everyone else.

I presume that you actually rejected both of the options I had
suggested. If so, can you be more specific about why neither of these
options are suitable for inclusion in Evolution?
Comment 5 Paul Bryan 2005-04-08 21:25:06 UTC
In Evolution 2.2.1.1 (the version I am now using), there is a way to
add header fields to display:

Edit -> Preferences -> Mail Preferences -> Headers

You can add "Sender" as a displayed mail header. This does seem to
solve the problem for me.

As to whether this is a suitable default, I suggest it is. It's only
displayed when the header exists.

closing as per last comment.

it is basically the same as your suggested number 3, albeit with a little more
user interaction required.
Comment 7 Paul Bryan 2005-08-22 15:09:13 UTC
Agreed. Thanks for the help.
