Description Hubert Figuiere (:hub) 2004-12-30 19:12:29 UTC
By default, we need one global setting for SMTP outgoing. The motivation
behind that is that *for years* SMTP relay is stricly dependent of your
network location. So having only one make it simple to change it that on
all 4 IMAP accounts.

Thunderbird has that.

Side effect: we should be able for each account to override the setting to
not use the global SMTP setting.
Comment 1 Jakub Steiner 2004-12-31 06:34:39 UTC
In fact, perhaps this setting should go to global network settings. I
wish it was even part of DHCP leased info.
Comment 2 Not Zed 2005-02-22 05:01:47 UTC
i can't see this ever happening, at least not in this way

we have specific outgoing settings because thats what people want,
e.g. for accessing multiple isp's at the same time.
Comment 3 Rodney Dawes 2005-02-28 00:16:51 UTC
Doesn't create a new account default to inheriting the default
account's SMTP settings if you choose to use SMTP, anyway? Doesn't
that mean this is a solved problem? :)
Comment 4 André Klapper 2005-12-06 23:42:20 UTC
hmm...comments?
anyway, updating version number
Comment 5 Hubert Figuiere (:hub) 2005-12-07 01:00:04 UTC
comment 2 is pure crack as with SMTP restriction and etc. SMTP should be a
setting related to the network location, not the incoming account.

In Canada (at least), most ISP filter out SMTP outgoing to force to use their
relays. Companies to the same on their network. And all the other only accept
SMTP from inside their network unless it is to deliver to them (it is called
prevention). Any other case is a case of open relay.

Off course there should still be an option to use a specific outgoing SMTP for a
specific account, but that is only an exceptionnal case. The only reason I see
for it is to use authenticated SMTP of SSL (or something).

Thunderbird as it right.

Bug 510909 might be the better way to fix this.
Comment 7 André Klapper 2021-05-19 11:12:59 UTC
GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org.
As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org
which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately
quite limited so not every ticket can get handled).

If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent
and supported software version, then please follow
  https://wiki.gnome.org/Community/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines
and create a new enhancement request ticket at
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evolution/-/issues/

Thank you for your understanding and your help.
