Description sam williams 2004-11-19 17:55:35 UTC
Distribution: Fedora Core release 3 (Heidelberg)
Package: Evolution
Priority: Major
Version: GNOME2.8.0 2.0.2
Gnome-Distributor: Red Hat, Inc
Synopsis: Need Aphabetic tabs in Contact Database
Bugzilla-Product: Evolution
Bugzilla-Component: Contacts [was: Addressbook]
Bugzilla-Version: 2.0.2
Description:
Please describe your feature request:
All released versions of Evolution had alphabetized tabs for the Contact
database. When you went there you could very easily find a user. Now
there is nothing except one large flat list. Removing this capability
permanently is a big mistake because it will cause a potential reduction
in productivity. I really don't care if you can pull up people
automatically with completion when you send mail, what if you have a
name and telephone number and no email address. What if you want to
consolidate entrie? Currently it is now very dysfunctional. You can
leave the view, just requiry that it be turned on through gconf, but to
remove it is just stupid. It makes the tool look less professional. It
makes it look like the developers were too lazy to put in the
functionality. Keep in mind that Evo 2 and beyond will be the first time
some people have ever seen evolution... Please put that back in!!!

if you'd take a quick look to the search bar, you could enter your
favourite letter and push the enter button. soon all names (ok, first
names and surnames) in your contact base will appear. ;-)

...and nowadays you do not have to scroll anymore to letters at the
end of the alphabet - that's an advantage! ;-)

i am more than sure that this is a WONTFIX and that the ximian guys
really did have enough reasons to not support the abc tabs anymore
(maintaining or i18n issues) - sorry. :-/

Comment 3 David Sterratt 2005-01-01 10:32:06 UTC
Please could you let us know why this functionality has been removed?
I've searched on Google and the Bugzilla, but can't find out why the
decision was taken. I understand the i18n difficulties, but I'd really
like to be able to explain to my distraught wife why her alphabet
buttons have gone!

Reopening and reassigning to design team just in case they want to
comment.

Actually what Andre Klapper said was right: see the thread about "How
the contact card is classfied by alphabets" in
http://lists.ximian.com/archives/public/evolution-hackers/2004-February/

Closing again. Sorry about this
