GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 267902
Everywhere ... is used, a tooltip should show full text
Last modified: 2021-05-19 11:32:04 UTC
There are lots of places in the Evo UI where ... is used to truncate text. In these places, a tooltip should be shown when you hover your mouse over text. This way the user can see the full text without relying on other methods. Examples: If the name of a folder is too long it gets truncated in the gray bar at the top with ... The only way to find out the full name of the folder is to look at the treeview If the name of the sender is too long, the table view of the email cuts off the name with ... the only way to find out the full name is to read the message. Examples where tooltips are used in this way: If you look at the list of windows, when you hover your mouse over one it shows the full name in a tooltip. Epiphany does it in the tabbed view.
etable had tooltips but they interfered so much with the application and the window manager they ahd to be removed.
in order to destroy the UI component (as discussed with jpr, dobey, and nags), changing component and reassigning. adding usability keyword. developers, please reassign appropriately if necessary.

GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org. As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately quite limited so not every ticket can get handled). If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent and supported software version, then please follow https://wiki.gnome.org/Community/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines and create a new enhancement request ticket at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evolution/-/issues/ Thank you for your understanding and your help.
