I get the same results under gnome 2.7.92 and 2.6.x

When I click on the new button it displays as a properly pushed button.

I'll assign this to jpr (sorry dude, I do not know who hacks on this
stuff atm, so assign accordingly please)

Even though this affects UI it is not really a UI problem but
something to do with the themes or the way the "new" button is
implemented in Evolution.
