Description Sudhakar 2003-03-30 22:59:54 UTC
Please give better keyboard shortcuts pls! I am user of pine and would
like to switch to evolution. unfotunately, evolution is forcing me to use
mouse to navigate between messages. in pine, i jsut need to press n/p for
next/prev mesg.

could you pelase provide better kb shortcuts? it is annoying to use the
mouse.

We will be doing some fixes to the keybindings for 1.6.x, though I am
not sure if we will be doing support for Pine/other random text-mode
mail clients in the keybindings. The main goal is to make everything
be consistent with the rest of the GNOME desktop. Adding anna and
myself to
CC: and changing target to 1.6

Hi there,

You should be able to use the arrow keys for this when the message
list is focused. I will do what I can to get these shortcuts listed in
the menus-- there are some problems with the widget set that make it
harder than you'd think.
Comment 3 Sudhakar 2003-04-14 04:29:33 UTC

Firstly, I am not asking for pine compatibility. Nevertheless, it is
nice to have keyboard shortcuts to jump to prev/next msgs even when
the list is not in focus. also for things like jumping to subject
line in the compose windows... there is a lot more to a good user
interface than a mouse!

thanks!
sudhakar.

Hey there,

Let me try to clarify my comments, because I fear that I've given you
the wrong impression. :-)

It is widely known/agreed upon here at Ximian that we need to fix up
the shortcuts, particularly for next/prev messages. I wasn't implying
that the current method is wonderful, but rather pointing out that you
really don't *have* to use the mouse, you currenty can use the arrow
keys. (If the arrow keys aren't working, then that is a bug which you
should file.)

Likewise, for the Subject thing, you can tab/shift+tab into the
subject entry. If that isn't working for you, you should file a
separate bug. (Again, I'm sorry if this sounds like I think this is a
perfect solution, because I know it is not-- rather, I am trying to
let you know how to solve the small problems that you seem to be using
the mouse for. There is very very little in Evo that one cannot do at
all from the keyboard.)

As we work more on accessibility stuff (for our 1.6 release), we'll
certainly work more on keyboard access. You should not worry that
we're planning on ignoring these issues, or on forcing people to
have/use a mouse.

Thanks.
Anna

Moving all 2.0 milestones to 1.5.x, please retarget if needed.
Comment 6 JP Rosevear 2003-12-10 15:36:51 UTC
Given that it works, i don't see this as an issue for 2.0, nor as much
of a blocker for 42070.
Comment 7 Tuomas Kuosmanen 2003-12-11 21:47:18 UTC
I agree. I think current Evo works reasonably well with keyboard, so
if we intend do something major for this for post-2.0, then fine, but
I dont think this is a huge issue right now. Cursor keys work fine,
and a few tabs should give you focus to the message list if needed.

And period "." and comma "," work for "next unread" and "prev unread".

"Future" sounds good.

Proxying this here, since bugzilla was down..

Folks, I tried to respond to this thru web. But there is a bug on
yourserver... So I could not use web interface. (Apparently, the
serverfolks are aware there is a bug...)

This is what I think evolution is lacking:

If you have a long message with lots of email and webaddresses, then
using TAB to get to the message list is a bit painful, esp. if you
haveto come from the bottom of the message. What I had in my mind was
"p"to get to prev message and "n" to get to next msg. "," and"." take
you to next and prev **unread** messages.

BTW, thanks for you efforts folks!

Sudhakar.

Comment 9 Timo Saarinen 2005-08-09 11:52:14 UTC
If you are not going to implement the next and prev shortcuts for while then,
please, make at least the message list area to have a focus on Evolution
startup. You have to hit tab key quite many times before the message list gets
focused.

Thanks for your time.

Comment 10 André Klapper 2005-10-09 00:48:59 UTC
timo: use F9
Comment 11 Timo Saarinen 2005-10-09 18:32:46 UTC
How does F9 help? It's shortcut for Send/Receive and doesn't have any effect on
keyboard focus in 2.2.1.1.
Comment 12 André Klapper 2005-12-31 20:49:26 UTC
timo: argh... sorry, i meant F6 (switching between the panes).

control+page down and control+page up for previous/next message are implemented in 2.5 and the upcoming stable 2.6, so i consider this as fixed.

please reopen if you disagree. :-)
