Description Pete Setchell 2001-09-16 13:23:36 UTC
Description of Problem:

Eudora for Windows 4.03 (and some other versions) doesn't handle PGP/MIME attachments properly.

It is much easier for users of these clients if the pgp cipertext is included in the email body instead of a PGP/MIME attachment - then they can use the pgp message plug-ins to decrypt easily.

Eudora + pgp claims to support PGP/MIME, but the reality is a little less ideal. PGP/MIME messages appear to contain two attachments called "Untitled", and the type of the message is not properly recognized. Clicking to decrypt attachments can produce a decrypted file in your attachments or temp folder!

There are more unhappy people here:
http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&threadm=38ac0640.23035063%40news.stofaNet.dk&rnum=1&prev=/groups%3Fq%3Deudora%2Bpgp%2Buntitled%26hl%3Den%26meta%3D

It is possible the problem only appears when you use IMAP:
http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&threadm=james-202DE8.00264510102000%40nntp.firstworld.net&rnum=6&prev=/groups%3Fq%3Deudora%2Bpgp%252Fmime%26meta%3Dsite%253Dgroups

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Install Eudora 4.03 + NAI pgp freeware (I used 7.03). I guess you'll need a windows pc for this step :(

2. Send a message from evolution to eudora.

3. Send a message from eudora to eudora with PGP/MIME disabled. This illustrates how easy decrypting the message is without using PGP/MIME.

Additional Information:

I wouldn't rate this as high priority, but it would be nice if an option to not use PGP/Mime was included in evolution. It should be pretty trivial to do and could make using pgp easier for some groups of people. The option may also solve problems with plugin integration / pgp support in other mailers.

I'm leaving this as wishlist and confirming, since I think that this
has been discussed in other pgp bugs. But... it boils down to 'those
other mailers are broken. badly.' You should be talking to their
authors and telling them to respect the specs for pgp/gpg mail, and
not asking us to break our spec compliance.

Not sure why this is ettore's.
Comment 7 Jeffrey Stedfast 2001-11-12 20:38:37 UTC
Why not just copy/paste from the command-line into the composer?

PGP/MIME is the way the spec says to do it, I'm not changing the
behavior.

feature = future
Comment 9 Jeffrey Stedfast 2001-11-20 19:08:58 UTC
uh, who reopened this? we are not doing this ever.
Comment 10 Dan Winship 2001-12-13 23:13:50 UTC
We *ARE* doing this Jeff.

What the hell is the point of an email program that doesn't
interoperate with the rest of the world?
