GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 205977
single shortcut to delete an entire thread
Last modified: 2013-09-13 00:47:10 UTC
Say I have a long thread in a folder I don't want to keep. If I collapse the thread so that the entire thread is represented by a single message, deleting that message only deletes the message shown. I think there should be some way of deleting a message _and all children_. Possibly not the same key (delete), but a context menu/menu bar entry. This would save large amounts of time when "reading" mailing lists.
Should be able to do this via Edit->Select Thread, then either Edit->Delete or Ctrl-D. Edit->Select thread isn't a single key accelerator so it's not the coolest, but you can still do Alt-E, T to quickly select all the children for a thread (whether expanded or collapsed) and then do what you want to them. Leaving bug open to handle suggestions for an accelerator for Select Thread. Maybe Ctrl+Alt+T or Shift+Ctrl+T?
Personnally, I think that "View -> Threaded Message List" doesn't deserve a shortcut key - how often is it used? I've used it once per folder, when I first went into it. Then "Use Threaded view by default" appeared in the snapshots, so I don't even use it now. IMHO, "Select Thread" should be Control-T, so select-thread-and-delete is C-T C-D.
I'm sold on the idea that Ctrl-T should be Select Thread instead of a setting that probably rarely gets played with (and for those rare times has adaquate alternative ways to change it). Any objections?
Hrm. I object, mainly because I use ctl+t a lot. If that gets changed, something equally simple should be used to replace it.
How about Control-T for select thread, and Shift-Control-T for Threaded View? Or remove Control-H for the help index, and use that at Threaded View?
I'd like to see a single accelerator(+menu item) for Delete Thread - this is one feature from mutt that was a real time saver and boy do I miss it Shift+Ctrl+D maybe?
feature = future

shortening the summary; this depends on 62224
use select thread (ctrl-h), then delete (ctrl-d).
not zed: "select thread" does not mark *entire* thread, only the postings after the one that was selected formerly. reopening since that is no workaround at all. :-/

well, cursor to the start of the thread, then select it. it is a feature to be able to select sub-threads.

As I have mentioned in my duplicate thread, Bug 591384. I would like if Evolution would delete the whole thread when a closed thread was highlighted and the delete button pushed. This is done in KMail and works very well.
Why is this bug reported as resolved? If it is because someone can use ctrl-h, and then delete then it is not resolved. That gets very annoying very quickly when you need to go through many threads, especially when you are reading through a busy mailing list. The Idea is to use a "single" short-cut key to delete the whole thread not a combination of two.
