If I press Ctrl-V for paste, it doesnt work, but pressing the toolbar paste
button or choosing Edit->Paste from the menu works.

are you sure you have MS keybindings and not [x]emacs one?

I suspect it is a keybinding issue - I got bit by the same thing.  

But that raises a bigger issue - the menu's indicate the wrong
shortcuts.
