GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 171791
Québec locations misspelled in gnome-applets gweather Locations.xml.in
Last modified: 2008-08-04 12:53:46 UTC
It seems that most locations in Québec, Canada in Locations.xml.in are misspelled and without their accents and circumflexes. Unless these locations have well established different names in English or well established different spellings in English, they should probably be spelled with the native French spelling. The alternate spelling could be listed in a comment. I've previously used the following strategy in the case of Finland when a location has several different names in the different local languages. I list the dominant local spelling at the top of the comment and in the entry, and the other spellings below. E.g. for a location where French is the dominant language (but which has an alternate English name): <!-- Translators: This is in Québec, Canada. local name (fr_CA): Île Foo local name (en_CA): Foo Island --> <_name>Île Foo</_name> For a location where English is the dominant language (but which has an alternate French name): <!-- Translators: This is in Québec, Canada. local name (en_CA): Foo Island local name (fr_CA): Île Foo --> <_name>Foo Island</_name> It would probably be useful if someone could investigate the proper spellings of the Quebec locations and provide comments and update the spellings in the entries according to the above. Then we can update the entries when string freeze is over. In the mean time, the comments can be updated.
Here are links to the Province of Quebec's website, in English and in French, for reference. http://www.gouv.qc.ca/wps/portal/pgs?lang=en http://www.gouv.qc.ca/wps/portal/pgs?lang=fr
Adam or Christophe, if you want to do it and have the possibility, feel free to fix the Québec location names in CVS HEAD of gnome-applets.
I am no good with inputting higher-bit characters. I gave up trying to make vim display/input them correctly. It would probably be best if someone who knew better what they were doing made this change.
I found copying and pasting the correct spellings from web sites into gedit to be a useful method when I updated the Croatian spellings. gedit has excellent UTF-8 support.
Status?
Of note: the entire rest of English-speaking canada calls Quebec "Quebec" whereas Quebec's English website calls it "Québec". In at least this case, the Quebec website (however official it may be) is using accents inappropriately.

Fixed with the new Locations.xml.in-builder; "Quebec" (the province and the city) and "Montreal" still appear without accents: <!-- Translators: this is a city in Quebec in Canada. The local name in French is "Montréal". --> <_name>Montreal</_name> but all other cities in Quebec are now properly accented. Eg: <_name>Rivière-du-Loup</_name> *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 527592 ***
