run "sudo gst-register --gst-mask=0" or pretty much anything that causes
gstreamer to initialize it's plugins.

Could you run the following command

  sudo gst-register-0.8 --gst-debug=*:5 --gst-debug-no-color 2>&1 | gzip > log.gz

and attach the output to the bug report?

the log shows it's the osx video sink, if I move it out of the way,
gst-register completes without error.

I think this is the same of #172526. Can you try the patch in the bug and see if
it works?
