GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 166325
second open of archive from browser fails
Last modified: 2020-11-11 19:13:18 UTC
1. Visit http://mirrors.sourcecontrol.net/teuf@gnome.org--2004/rhythmbox/rhythmbox--playbin/rhythmbox--playbin--0.9/patch-11/rhythmbox--playbin--0.9--patch-11.patches.tar.gz with Firefox. 2. Select open with File Roller 3. Browse archive 4. Exit File Roller 5. Visit URL from step 1 again 6. Select open with File Roller 7. Browsing archive fails Firefox saves the file the second time as: rhythmbox--playbin--0.9--patch-11.patches.tar-1.gz Apparently, file-roller doesn't recognize rhythmbox--playbin--0.9--patch-11.patches.tar-1 as a tar file after gunzipping.
...it happens with epiphany too. I'd say it's more a mozilla bug than a file-roller bug.
I think that this is a file-roller bug, because file-roller doesn't use magic to detect a filetype (as said in bug #126130), but instead trusts the extension (so that a file foo.tar-1.gz won't be opened as a tar.gz, which is wrong).
Or additionally something like this: * test extensions * handle .gz * test extensions * unknown extension * detect magic * handle .tar

bugzilla.gnome.org is being replaced by gitlab.gnome.org. We are closing all old bug reports and feature requests in GNOME Bugzilla which have not seen updates for a long time. If you still use file-roller and if you still see this bug / want this feature in a currently supported version of GNOME (currently that would be 3.38), then please feel free to report it at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/file-roller/-/issues/ Thank you for creating this report and we are sorry it could not be implemented (volunteer workforce and time is limited).
