GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 164406
"unmount volume" should be renamed for server icons
Last modified: 2017-08-28 10:35:24 UTC
Currently, if you have selected "connect to server" it will put a server icon on the desktop. The right-click menu for it contains "unmount volume". IMHO, this is a very poor choice of words: 1. "unmount" assumes that the volume is "mounted" -- but the icon can be present (and "unmount volume" in the menu) even if are not connected to the server, or not connected the internet at all. 2. I'd expect that "unmount" disconnects from server. Not so: it also removes the icon from the desktop -- so if I want to connect to this server again, I need to manually recreate the icon. I did this by mistake twice -- and I am not a new user. My suggestion (I am not an expert, there may be better suggestions): for server icons, rename "unmount volume" to "disconnect" and make this menu item to close connection wiuthout removing the icon. Also, enable menu item "move to trash"/""delete" which should be used for removing the icon.
This bug is very similar to bug 133907 (maybe it should be a dependency). I would like to add that pressing the Delete key on a server icon should remove the icon/disconnect it, but that would probably come for free with enabling "move to trash".

Usability squad, what naming scheme do you propose? I also find the current name quiet unsatisfactory.
If we want to keep the current behaviour, I think you'd ideally just want to enable the "Delete" and/or "Move to Trash" items (whichever of the two are possible), and remove the "Umount Volue" item altogether. I think it would be reasonably obvious that 'deleting' an active connection would disconnect it as well. (I guess we could change the menu entries to "Disconnect and Delete" and "Disconnect and Move to Trash" while the connection was active, if we wanted to make it really clear.) Alexander's suggestion to make it a two-step process (disconnect, then delete if required) is reasonable too-- it all depends on our expected use cases. How often, in general, do we think people will want to manually disconnect from a server without deleting the icon? It's not something I ever feel the need to do, but perhaps that's because I know nautilus doesn't let me anyway :) [We do need to keep an eye on inconsistencies with other types of 'mountable' icons on the desktop, I guess... one kind of nice thing at the moment is that the 'get rid of this icon' command is the last item on the context menu whether it's a network connection, CD, USB stick or whatever. We'd lose that by implementing either of these suggestions.]
Calum: "How often, in general, do we think people will want to manually disconnect from a server without deleting the icon?" It is very convenient to have an icon for an FTP connection to your web server, without being connected to it all the time. I hope you're not suggesting to take this possibility away.. :]
>I hope you're not suggesting to take >this possibility away.. :] I hope not. The question is, do we want a menu item "close connection"? Calum is probably right that it is rarely used - to close ftp connection, you usually just close nautilus window showing the ftp location.
Right-- I'm just trying to make sure we know exactly what we'd like it to do, so we don't just end up inventing a better label for something that does the wrong thing anyway :)
Mass changing Nautilus version for bugs that have GNOME 2.13 version info.
We're string frozen, and this won't make it into Nautilus 2.14. Unmilestoning since no final agreement was made.
One year and this simple change have not been done! :.( Guys, this extremely simple, if i don't want the icon on my desktop or menu, i hit delete or move to trash it and in this command Linux unmount my connection and erase the icon. If i want that icon i do nothing! If i want to disconnect from that server, i choose in popup menu the option "Disconnect to server".
(Distantly related to Bug #115763)
I just noticed that connected network location icons on my desktop still have the "Unmount volume" entry in Gnome 2.22.2.
Nowadays it's just "Unmount" (or "Eject"), could this bug be closed?
The string is still not ideal, but the other points in this bug are kind of obsolete since we don't have permanent shares on the desktop anymore.
Would "Disconnect" be a better name for network share? (Not sure how distinguish them btw)
Can anybody update this by describing the situation (and string) in 2.32 and/or 3.0, please?
(In reply to comment #16) > Can anybody update this by describing the situation (and string) in 2.32 and/or > 3.0, please? We don't have permanent shares on the desktop any more like Cosimo says (also when show-desktop-icons is enabled), but mounted shares are still visible (i) under 'Network' in the Nautilus sidebar and (ii) under Go > Computer. Their context menus have an 'unmount' item. Bookmarked network shares in Nautilus simply have a 'Delete' item in the context menu which seems accurate to me.
The design for this has changed a lot, making this bug obsolete as a whole. However, some points still hold: 1) The "+ Other Locations" view uses "Disconnect" instead of "Unmount", as suggested in this bug report. However, the siderbar still uses "Unmount". I've now reported this inconsistency as bug 786889. 2) We now have a "Recent Servers" list from where it's is easy to reconnect to servers after unmounting. Also, if a permanent sidebar entry is needed, it can be bookmarked. The UX for Bookmarks into remote servers is not the best, but that's bug 756418. Marking this old report as obsolete then.
