Description Reed Hedges 2005-01-11 15:48:42 UTC
The "Columns" filesystem view mode in MacOSX (originally used in NeXT Step I
think) is very elegant and easy to use, I recommend considering it for Nautilus
as well. The MacOSX implementation uses a new column for file
preview/information when a non-folder is selected, as well.

This is not exactly a duplicate of bug 81610, if 81610 is for MacOS9.

The NeXT or MacOSX mode that people are requesting is a "columns" view. The
browser is divided into about 2-5 vertical columns (you can add/remove them), in
theory there can be any number of columns, with a horizontal scroll bar at the
bottom for all of them. Each column has its own vertical scroll bar and displays
a listing of a directory. Initially only the first column is filled. When you
select a directory (by clicking) in that first column, the second column is
filled with a listing for that directory, etc. This is a very efficient way of
browsing for many tasks (I find it especially useful for reorganizing files).
Additionally, in MacOS X, if you select a file (non-directory), details of that
file and a preview are displayed in the next free column. (Though the sidebar
in Nautilus performs a similar function).

Mac OS 9 does not have a browsing mode like this, AFAIK.
