GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 160719
Poor usage of window space
Last modified: 2005-02-02 20:31:42 UTC
Comparing Nautilus to Konqueror or Windows filemanager it is by far the worst of the three in terms of efficent space utilization. I don't care much for eye candy, which I think you are fine. I care about how quickly and clearly I can find/move/copy/rename/open my files. I will attach some figures to illustrate. Other information:
Created attachment 34603 [details] Side by side comparison of Konquorer and Nautilus Konquorer: 80 files visiable very readable. Filenames truncated. Nautilus: 36 files visiable very difficult to read. Text on side of icons option is worst. View as list at 25% zoom shows 17 files but is readable. Windows is better than both from a density standpoint and readability but I don't have number or figure for these files. Windows does not trunkate file names but expands columns to match largest filename.
Created attachment 34605 [details] Recommend formating Here's what I'm suggesting. It would give the easy to read top to bottom column view. Not trunkate file names (or wrap them which is also hard to read). Having columns do best fit automatically be default uses space better than having all the columns match the longest filename. I can go either way on the icons, but if I had to choose for speed I would go with speed. Note that both Konquorer and Nautilus stink when it comes to folders with lots of files, windows fm is almost instant.
