Attached a file, which contains the Luxi Serif/BitStream-VeraSans-Roman fonts
and created by gedit. This one covers all the 310 glyps there in the Luxi Serif
font (though the input text file is badly formatted), displays everything
without any issue. 

So I assume the issue is in not the plain text display, will look into more, but
basic apps can display text OK with this font.

No things work fine with GtkPrint.
