I have done many images ".mng" with gimp. They work perfecly, but if I try to
open any of those file Gimp says:"Unrecognized file format". 
The strange is tha I can save with the mng extension, because is in the possible
extension of Gimp, and moreover it produce the file preview in the open dialog!

The GIMP MNG plug-in can't open MNG files (yet). The missing features in the MNG
plug-in are tracked in bug #79131.
