1) Open Nautilus
2) File -> Connect to Server
3) Change the Service type to SSH.
4) Enter the connection details and connect.
5) Open the mounted volume from the desktop launcher.
6) Drag an image file from the nautilus window to GIMP.

Expected response:
 GIMP opens the image via gnome-vfs, just like the image were local.

Actual response:
 GIMP displays the following error message - 

  GIMP Message
  Opening 'sftp://user@domain.com/path/to/image.jpg' failed:
  Plug-In could not open image
