I'm reassigning this to Lapo. He's been working on updated icons for all the applets, and has a workable version for this applet, in all the sizes. Aside from a few needed naming/installation changes in gnome-{panel,applets} for all the icons, I think his icons are great updates to use.

All the icons for gnome panel

In this package you can find all the icons needed by gnome-panel. I think the names I used make some sense, any suggestions Rodney?
There isn't anything for gnome-main-manu, for that one you should use start-here from the icon naming specs base set.
I added gnome-window for the current application-default-icon which is actually shipped with the panel.

animation file for Wanda the fish

Here attached is a swimming Wanda animation, with the .svg source.

I committed all those icons.

Some issues/questions:
 + for 16x16 there are gnome-panel-force-quit.svg and gnome-panel-force-quit.xcf.bz2. Which one is the source?
 + I don't think we're using gnome-window in upstream panel (it's in Ubuntu, AFAIK)

I also need to remove the icons from gnome-desktop...
