I have seen that items in left pane of Gtk's file selector will appear in an
unsorted fashion--well, perhaps reverse-sorted when numbers are involved.

We just use the order in which gnome-vfs handed them to us.

Would alphabetical order of the volume names be sufficient?

In what order does Nautilus show your volumes?

I think this should be at the gnome-vfs level.
