When the applet starts (e.g. on login), all the notes appear even when the Show
Notes option is unchecked.

(It gets funnier, since if you right-click the applet and choose "Show Notes",
it would make it checked, and they'll still appear. Only upon toggling it once
more they'll disappear.)

This has been fixed very recently. Please upgrade to the just released
gnome-applets 2.8.1.1.
