Can you provide more information ? Do you get any error message when starting gdesklets in a shell ?
Please try updating PyGTK and gnome-python to the latest stable versions (2.4 and 2.6) and tell us if the problem still persists.
I can confirm that the error occurs on Gentoo systems (which do not have ebuilds for the latest Gnome-Python or PyOrbit). After manually installing Gnome-Python-2.6.0 and PyOrbit-2.0.1 everything worked correctly.
