have several virtual desktops with applications visible on them.
Press ctrl-alt D - to show your desktop,
Click on some nautilus folder & get a window pop-up.
Press ctrl-alt D again

At this stage it appears you loose all your windows; every other window on every
other virtual workspace disappears, and the only way you can get it back is by
switching there & doing alt-tab

Very painful indeed ... makes show-desktop a mine-field.

There's a patch to fix this in bug 142198.
