GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 154283
Dropping desktop volumes on Trash should trigger an eject or unmount.
Last modified: 2004-12-22 21:47:04 UTC
1. Insert a CD into a CD-ROM drive. 2. Wait for CD-ROM volume icon to appear on desktop. 3. Drag the CD-ROM volume icon to the trash. 4. Nautilus displays an error dialog stating, "You cannot delete a volume icon. If you want to eject the volume, please use Eject in the right-click menu of the volume." Instead of displaying an error dialog, nautilus could improve its usability by confirming the user's actions and upon confirmation ejecting or unmounting the volume.

Shouldn't "its contents" be "it's contents"?
In US English, no. "It's" is strictly a contraction of "it is". Additionally, while I'm not sure about trash-to-eject for CDs and other removable media, trash-to-unmount does make some sense, especially for remote connect-to-server mounts.
No, "it's" is short for "it is".
We have decided to not support trash-to-unmount in nautilus. Allowing it would mean introducing it as the way unmount is done, and part of the interaction model of nautilus. Which we don't want. The dialog was added to show someone used to that model how to unmount a volume.

"Which we don't want." Is a rather weak argument against this method to unmount a volume. What is wrong with using the trash to eject or umount a volume? I figure dragging a volume to the trash would be more discoverable than a single entry in a right click menu.
Is there a separate, more general bug report for the "which we don't want" part? For example, an RFE "change the way unmount is done"? I can't seem to find one. If not I will file one.
This feature was already discussed at great lenths in bug 115763. I guess this bug should be closed at WONTFIX as well...
