GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 152789
TWAIN selection hangs on Wingimp
Last modified: 2007-11-21 12:58:38 UTC
From the "File" pull down menu select "Acquire" "TWAIN...". A new window opens with the title "Select Source". Nothing else ever happens. If the cursor is moved into the "Select Source" window it changes to an hourglass. If the window is obscured it doesn't repaint except for the title bar. The rest of gimp seems to go on and work normally while the "Select Source" just sits there. I am running under Windows 2000 5.00.2195 with sp4.
Do TWAIN devices work for you in other applications? Is there a scanner connected at all? Please specify the version of GIMP that you are using. It is very unlikely that we can do anything about this. The TWAIN plug-in seems to work for most people and for some it doesn't. That makes it very hard to debug the problem, especially since I am not aware of a core GIMP developer who would be using a TWAIN scanner on the win32 platform. If you could help us with this problem, that would be very much appreciated.
There is a USB scanner attached which uses a TWAIN interface. It works fine with Photoshop 5.5 . It looks like I'll have to debug it myself if no one else can reproduce it. I was planning on contributing to gimp at some point but not this soon.
I get the same results as you, Charles, and I'm running a Microtek E6 scanner with a SCSI interface in Win2000. Scanning is working fine with Corel Photo-Paint, OpenOffice, and TextBridge. I have no programming skills.
Created attachment 35043 [details] Report created by WinXP after I try to select TWAIN
I have Mustek 1200CP scanner installed and it works properly in Photoshop 7.0, Irfan View etc. But when I choose File->...->TWAIN, check my scanner there (Mustek 1200CP 25088.25427 (32-32) is written there) and click Select I have win error "twain.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

I also get the "Select Source" Window without any device beeing listed. "...The rest of gimp seems to go on and work normally while the "Select Source" just sits there..." Other programs scan without problems. I have a Mustek 1200SP on a ISA SCSI interface in Win2000 SP4. GIMP version 2.2.0 pre-built.
I have the same problem, Microtek V300 scannner works fine with other apps. Message from GIMP: Plug-In crashed: "twain.exe" (C:\Program Files\GIMP-2.2\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins\twain.exe)
Same here! WindowsXP + SP2, Microtek Scanmaker 4 (Adaptec SCSI Card) TWAIN Interface works without problems in Photoshop, Photopaint, Silverfast etc. Message from GIMP: Plug-In crashed: "twain.exe" (C:\Program Files\GIMP-2.2\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins\twain.exe) The bug is reproducible on diffrent PCs
same here. my config is as follows: Scanner: Artec ViewStation AM12E (parallel) installed Gimp: gtk+-2.6.7, gimp-2.2.7-i586, gimp-help-2-0.7, gimp-gap-2.0.2 OS: German Windows XP SP1 w. all latest patches. Hardware: Asus A8V (Socket 939) w. AMD64 3000+
I too am experiencing difficulty with the "File -> Acquire -> Twain" function. A new window opens with the title "Select Source", but beyond this nothing else ever happens. If the cursor is moved into the "Select Source" window it changes to an hourglass. The rest of gimp seems to go on and work normally while the "Select Source" just sits there. There are no reported conflicts or sharing of resources related to the above identified scanner in Windows System Information utility. The scanner also works correctly with TextBridge Pro 9. The GIMP installation is from the pre-built "Windows" binaries. GIMP 2.2.8 GTK+ 2.6.7 If I can be of further assistance, please contact me via the following jwamplerusa| insert the correct e-mail address separator here |yahoo.com
I experienced the same problem. Gimp is from gimp-2.2.17-i586-setup.exe installed. GTK is from gtk+-2.10.13-setup.exe. I also have a scsi card and twain runs fine from other applications, too. My scanner is an N-TEK SB 1200 being recognized as Microtek Scanmaker E3. The same hardware under Linux runs perfectly with sane. I have the files XP would have sent as bug attachements available if interested. No, I am no developer, sorry.
