Report created by WinXP after I try to select TWAIN (74.91 KB, text/plain)

Details

Description Charles P. Lamb 2004-09-16 06:29:50 UTC
From the "File" pull down menu select "Acquire" "TWAIN...". A new window opens
with the title "Select Source". Nothing else ever happens. If the cursor is
moved into the "Select Source" window it changes to an hourglass. If the
window is obscured it doesn't repaint except for the title bar. The rest of
gimp seems to go on and work normally while the "Select Source" just sits
there. I am running under Windows 2000 5.00.2195 with sp4.
Comment 1 Sven Neumann 2004-09-16 08:49:36 UTC
Do TWAIN devices work for you in other applications? Is there a scanner
connected at all? Please specify the version of GIMP that you are using.

It is very unlikely that we can do anything about this. The TWAIN plug-in seems
to work for most people and for some it doesn't. That makes it very hard to
debug the problem, especially since I am not aware of a core GIMP developer who
would be using a TWAIN scanner on the win32 platform. If you could help us with
this problem, that would be very much appreciated.
Comment 2 Charles P. Lamb 2004-09-16 16:04:06 UTC
There is a USB scanner attached which uses a TWAIN interface. It works fine
with Photoshop 5.5 . It looks like I'll have to debug it myself if no one else
can reproduce it. I was planning on contributing to gimp at some point but not
this soon.
Comment 3 Lane Lester 2004-11-06 22:39:36 UTC
I get the same results as you, Charles, and I'm running a Microtek E6 scanner
with a SCSI interface in Win2000. Scanning is working fine with Corel
Photo-Paint, OpenOffice, and TextBridge. I have no programming skills.

Comment 5 L.Marvell 2004-12-20 11:22:16 UTC
I have Mustek 1200CP scanner installed and it works properly in Photoshop 7.0,
Irfan View etc. But when I choose File->...->TWAIN, check my scanner there
(Mustek 1200CP 25088.25427 (32-32) is written there) and click Select I have win
error "twain.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for
the inconvenience."

I also get the "Select Source" Window without any device beeing listed. "...The
rest of gimp seems to go on and work normally while the "Select Source" just sits

Other programs scan without problems. I have a Mustek 1200SP on a ISA SCSI
interface in Win2000 SP4. GIMP version 2.2.0 pre-built.

I too am experiencing difficulty with the "File -> Acquire -> Twain" function. A
new window opens with the title "Select Source", but beyond this nothing else
ever happens. If the cursor is moved into the "Select Source" window it changes
to an hourglass. The rest of gimp seems to go on and work normally while the
"Select Source" just sits there.

The current environment is as follows:
OS Name	Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Version	5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600
OS Manufacturer	Microsoft Corporation
System Name	XXXXXXXXXXX
System Manufacturer	Dell Inc.
System Model	Dimension XPS
System Type	X86-based PC
Processor	x86 Family 15 Model 4 Stepping 3 GenuineIntel ~3591 Mhz
Processor	x86 Family 15 Model 4 Stepping 3 GenuineIntel ~3591 Mhz
BIOS Version/Date	Dell Inc. A06, 5/6/2005
SMBIOS Version	2.3
Windows Directory	C:\WINDOWS
System Directory	C:\WINDOWS\system32
Boot Device	\Device\HarddiskVolume2
Locale	United States
Hardware Abstraction Layer	Version = "5.1.2600.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)"

Scanner Device information:

Microtek SlimScan C6u #5	USB\VID_05DA&PID_009A\5&AE9219D&0&1

Scanner Driver:

Microtek SlimScan C6u	No	IMAGE	5.0.2071.1	6/24/1999	Microtek	microtek.inf	Not
Available	USB\VID_05DA&PID_009A\5&AE9219D&0&1
(Note: the above is the latest driver provided by Microtek. I tried a driver for
a later equivalent Microtek scanner, but it would not recognize the SlimScan
C6u unit)

The Windows Error Reported is typically:

7/6/2005 10:16 PM	Application Hang	Hanging application twain.exe, version
0.0.0.0, hang module hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address
0x00000000.

0.0.0.0, hang module hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address
0x00000000.

There are no reported conflicts or sharing of resources related to the above
identified scanner in Windows System Information utility.

A typical "Twain.LOG" file is as follows:
TWAIN_32.DLL - MESSAGE - CTwunk  ::AppInitialize - Reset Log
TWAIN_32.DLL - MESSAGE - CTwunk  ::OpenServer - Starting Thunker
TWAIN_32.DLL - MESSAGE - CTwunk ::CloseServer - Why Can't We Find The Thunker

TWAIN_32.DLL - MESSAGE - CTWTRACE--CONTROL, IDENTITY, USERSELECT
TWAIN_32.DLL - MESSAGE - CTWTRACE--PhotoImpact(11) to Microtek ScanWizard
(32bit)(12):
TWAIN_32.DLL - MESSAGE - CTWTRACE--CONTROL, USERINTERFACE, DISABLEDS
TWAIN_32.DLL - MESSAGE - DSM --DsmEntryDiagExit (RC = 0, CC = 0)

TWAIN_32.DLL - MESSAGE - CTWTRACE--CONTROL, PARENT, CLOSEDSM
TWAIN_32.DLL - MESSAGE - DSM --DsmEntryDiagExit (RC = 0, CC = FFFF)

Please note the entries for "PhotoImpact", another graphics program, which works
correctly calling the TWAIN interface without a problem. The scanner also works
correctly with TextBridge Pro 9.

The GIMP installation is from the pre-built "Windows" binaries.
GIMP 2.2.8
GTK+ 2.6.7

I experienced the same problem.
Gimp is from gimp-2.2.17-i586-setup.exe installed.
GTK is from gtk+-2.10.13-setup.exe.

I also have a scsi card and twain runs fine from other applications, too.
My scanner is an N-TEK SB 1200 being recognized as Microtek Scanmaker E3.

The same hardware under Linux runs perfectly with sane. I have the files XP would have sent as bug attachements available if interested. No, I am no developer, sorry.
